Our Leadership Team

  • Aakarsh Bengani

    PRESIDENT

Hey, I’m Aakarsh and I’m a senior majoring in Data Science. I am curious about intelligent system behavior and excited to build safe and valuable ML systems. In my free time I like running, playing soccer and tasting spicy food.

  • Vinaya Sivakumar

    POLICY LEAD

Hi! I'm Vinaya, a second-year studying computer science and cognitive science. I am a co-facilitator for the AI Governance DeCal and lead the tech policy group. I’m currently researching mis-and-disinformation about birth control and abortion on TikTok and previously analyzed European Union AI legislation in collaboration with Haas. In my free time, I love going to concerts and hanging out with my friends.

  • George Ingebretsen

    RECRUITMENT/FELLOWS CO-LEAD

Hi, I'm George! Lately I've been most interested in interp, evals, and singular learning theory, and would love to talk about anything related to making sure AI goes well! I spend most of my free time reading books and blogs, rock climbing, keeping up with my Anki decks, and messing around with my Obsidian setup. Please feel free to email me at georgeingebretsen at berkeley dot edu!

  • DECAL LEAD

    Dev Sajnani

    TECHNICAL CO-LEAD

Hey everyone! I'm a junior studying EECS. I like most stuff related to intelligence, logic, and controls, while I also spend an unhealthy amount of time following soccer (forza juve!). Within safety, I'm largely interested in interpretability / evaluation for responsible scaling policies and exploring how AI systems can integrate with info security and compute acceleration.

  • Nelson Lojo

    TECHNICAL CO-LEAD

Hey! I’m Nelson, a Graduate student studying how generative techniques will interface with the software development cycle (and how to operationalize an understanding to improve education). I am interested in the computational aspects of cognition and how we can coerce AI systems to be interpretable and/or well-behaved. Outside of AI, I am interested in software/infra engineering, hardware design, and education (in software/hardware).

  • Yury Orlovskiy

    EVENTS LEAD

Hi! I’m a senior from Moscow and the Bay Area studying EECS. I’m currently work with the Berkeley SkyLab on research in diverse generations using LLMs. I'm generally interested in how we can interface with AI systems in a safe and beneficial way. I also like playing chess, making coffee, and traveling.

  • Dylan Xu

    GOVERNANCE LEAD

Hi everyone! I’m a third-year Berkeley student majoring in math and CS. I also like playing guitar, card games, and watching anime. I’m interested in understanding the internals of advanced AI models so that we can robustly predict and steer their behavior. If you want to talk about anything, email me at dylanx26 at berkeley dot edu — I’d love to chat!

  • Julia Kim

    ADMIN + DESIGN LEAD

Hi! I'm Julia, a second year studying business with a PPL minor. Besides design, I'm interested in AI governance and literacy, spreading resources for people to solve their AI-related issues. I also enjoy reading good fiction (The Candy House!) and listening to trap music when I need caffeine.

  • Hilary Wang

    OUTREACH + WEBSITE LEAD

Hi, I'm Hilary! I’m a sophomore majoring in Data Science. Currently, I'm learning more about interpretability and AI use in healthcare. I love true crime pods, cats, and playing at new golf courses. My current drink fixation is an iced orange blossom latte.

  • Will Cai

    TECHNICAL CO-LEAD

Hi! I'm a senior studying CS and Math. My research focuses on aligning AI systems with human values and making them robust against adversaries. In the future, I want to explore more about interpretability and provable attack and defense. In my free time, I enjoy rock climbing, playing golf, chess, and video games.

  • Jason Hausenloy

    POLICY CO-LEAD

Hi! I’m Jason, an applied math major at Berkeley. I want to figure out how humanity should navigate this AI thing. I’m passionate about AI policy, and am currently interested in frontier data governance and how AI will affect young people. I love listening to podcasts (John Green’s Anthropocene Reviewed!), Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality and ultimate frisbee.

  • Ian Habich

    OPERATIONS CO-LEAD

Hi there! I'm Ian, a freshman studying math here at UC Berkeley. At BASIS, I'm focused on operations and technical work, as well as policy involving the intersection of young people and AI. My interests outside of school include philosophy, constructed languages, system administration, and all other areas of human knowledge.

Our Alumni

  • Nathaniel Li

    ALUM

Hi, I'm Nat, a senior studying CS, and helped kickstart BASIS in 2022. I currently work on language model evaluations and robustness, and am also interested in policy! Outside of school, I like learning about music, rock climbing, and electoral politics.

  • Adam Khoja

    ALUM

Hi, I’m a third year undergraduate studying Math and Computer Science. In my free time, I enjoy listening to electronic music, playing chess, and hiking.

Fun Fact: I’ve attended every UC Symphony concert during my time at Cal!

  • Tzu Kit Chan

    ADVISOR

Tzu is an advisor at BASIS where he helps make important decision with the leadership board. Previously, he did operations at Atlas Fellowship, ML Alignment & Theory Scholars Program, and ran EAGxBerkeley 2022 conference. See his work at tzukitchan.com.
